A five-minute trackside data review

You have five minutes before the next session. Throw out the junk laps, compare your best clean lap with a normal clean lap, and find the biggest gap. Look at that one section and decide what you want to try. Then stop looking at data and go drive.

Start with two clean laps. Pick one obvious difference and ignore the rest until you understand it.

The main idea

Use the format “what happened, why it may have happened, what to try.” For example: “The loss begins before Turn 5, the speed trace shows an early slowdown, so next run hold speed to the same marker before beginning the slowdown.”

What to look at

  • Impossible or partial laps
  • The largest delta change that stays gained or lost
  • A visible line or speed difference at the same location
  • One action the driver can remember

Try this

  • Minute 1: exclude invalid laps
  • Minute 2: select two comparable laps
  • Minutes 3–4: inspect the strongest sustained difference
  • Minute 5: state the observation, likely reason, and next action

Keep in mind

One trace cannot prove driver intent. Phrase uncertain causes as hypotheses and use video, direct channels, or another repeat to confirm them.

FAQ

Why compare with a representative lap?

It exposes repeatable technique differences and avoids letting a lucky or anomalous best lap dictate the next change.

What if there are several large losses?

Choose the safest, clearest, and most repeatable one. Save the rest for later.
