How to measure lap consistency

Consistency is not just five laps with similar total times. You can gain time in one corner and lose it in another and still land on the same number. Look at the same corner across the session and see whether your line and speed actually repeat.

The main idea

Similar lap times can hide completely different laps. Break the track into corners and you will see whether you are actually repeating the same drive or just making different mistakes that cancel out.

What to look at

  • Median and spread of clean lap times
  • Corner-by-corner variance
  • Repeated speed and path shapes
  • Stable behavior as tires and traffic change

  • Remove invalid and traffic laps
  • Group comparable running conditions

  • Choose one process cue that reduces that variance

Keep in mind

Do not punish safe adaptations to traffic, flags, tires, weather, or mechanical changes as inconsistency. Label the context before calculating spread.

Is standard deviation enough?

It summarizes lap-time spread but does not reveal where or why the variation occurs.

Should I remove the fastest lap?

Keep it if valid, but report both the full clean range and the stable cluster so one outlier does not define consistency.
