Can telemetry prove understeer or oversteer?

GPS and G data cannot prove that the car understeered or oversteered. They can show that the line went wide, speed fell off, or the car rotated differently. To say why, you need steering, yaw, wheel speed, video, or the driver telling you what happened.

The red lap runs wider in the middle of the corner. That is an observation. Calling it understeer requires steering, yaw, video, or driver context.

The main idea

Say what you can actually see: the car ran wider, rotated faster, or lost speed. Only call it understeer or oversteer when steering, yaw, wheel speed, video, or the driver’s feedback backs that up.

What to look at

  • Steering angle relative to path curvature
  • Yaw response and lateral acceleration
  • Wheel-speed behavior
  • Onboard video and driver observation

  • First locate the event with delta and speed
  • Check path and yaw-rate change if recorded
  • Compare steering input if available
  • Review video and driver feedback
  • Look for the same relationship on repeated laps

Keep in mind

A wide line is not automatically understeer, and a yaw spike is not automatically oversteer. Driver input, bumps, camber, traffic, and GPS error can produce similar traces.

Is yaw rate enough?

No. It becomes useful when compared with steering, speed, lateral acceleration, path, and expected vehicle response.

What should a GPS-only guide say?

Describe the path and speed outcome, then identify understeer or oversteer as a hypothesis requiring more evidence.
