How to find coasting in telemetry

Coasting is the dead space where you are not really slowing, turning, or accelerating. On the chart it often looks like a dip in G-sum between the big parts of the corner. Compare a faster lap and see whether that empty space gets smaller.

Slowing

Both laps arrive at the same corner. The faster lap spends less time waiting between slowing down, turning, and accelerating.

The main idea

Coasting is an opportunity when the car is waiting without a useful reason and a better lap replaces the gap with a controlled transition. Some neutral time may be appropriate for balance, visibility, or safety, so judge the net result.

What to look at

  • Low Combined G between major phases
  • Speed declining gently without strong deceleration
  • A gap before lateral acceleration or acceleration pickup
  • Repeated waiting at the same place

Try this

  • Plot speed, longitudinal G, lateral G, and Combined G
  • Mark sustained low-G regions
  • Locate them on the track
  • Compare against a faster repeatable lap
  • Decide whether the gap reflects hesitation or a necessary balance phase

Keep in mind

Low G does not reveal pedal position or intent. Uphill and downhill sections, shifts, maintenance throttle, sensor noise, and vehicle balance can alter the trace.

FAQ

Is all coasting bad?

No. The question is whether a repeatable alternative improves the whole segment safely.

Can Combined G prove I lifted?

No. It shows the vehicle’s acceleration magnitude, not the exact pedal input.
