How to compare two laps from an AiM Solo
Compare two complete laps over distance, not only elapsed time. Align them at the start line, inspect the time-delta trace to find where the gap changes, then use speed and track position to explain that change. Compare similar laps and conditions so traffic, warm-up, or a partial lap does not masquerade as driver improvement.

Choose the two laps
Use complete laps from the same layout and similar conditions. Start with fastest valid versus next-best valid, or the same driver before and after a specific change.
Read the delta first
A lap-time delta shows where one lap gains or loses time relative to the reference. Look for a sustained change in slope rather than a tiny one-sample spike.
Explain it with speed and position
- Earlier speed loss can indicate braking sooner
- A lower minimum speed can indicate over-slowing
- A faster minimum with a poor exit can indicate the wrong compromise
- A different path can change both distance traveled and corner geometry
Check whether it repeats
Open another clean lap and inspect the same section. A pattern across several laps is a stronger coaching signal than one isolated trace.

Should laps be aligned by time or distance?
Distance alignment is usually easier for corner-by-corner driver comparison because the same horizontal position represents the same place on track.
What does a flat delta trace mean?
The relative time gap is not materially changing in that section. A rising or falling trace shows one lap gaining on the other.
Can I compare laps from different days?
Yes if the layout is compatible, but account for weather, tires, traffic, setup, and track conditions before attributing the difference to driving.
