An optimal lap combines the quickest valid segments from different laps in one session or comparison set. It estimates what the driver might achieve by joining those best segments together, but it is not a lap that actually happened and can be unrealistic when segment boundaries, traffic, changing grip, or incompatible driving choices distort the calculation.
